Do I need to prepare for my eye exam?
There is not much you need to do to prepare for your eye exam. It’s important to bring your current glasses or contacts, list any medications, and be ready to discuss any changes in your medical history. You’ll be asked to remove your contacts or glasses during the eye exam. If you wear contacts, we’ll provide a temporary case and solution for your appointment.
How often should I schedule an eye exam?
If you aren’t experiencing any vision concerns, scheduling an exam once every 2 to 3 years is sufficient. However, if you’re someone who wears glasses or contacts, or has a family history of eye disease, you’ll want to schedule an annual exam.
Routine Tests During Eye Exams
We’ll review your medical history at the beginning of your exam and determine which tests we’ll need to complete.
Visual Acuity: This is where you will read from an eye chart to determine how well you can see at various distances.
Refraction: We use lenses to determine your prescription for glasses or contact lenses (if needed).
Eye Muscle Movement: Your eye movements are evaluated to ensure proper coordination and function.
Slit-Lamp Examination: A microscope-like instrument examines the structures of your eye, such as the cornea, iris, and lens.
Retinal Examination: Your pupils are dilated (if necessary), allowing the doctor to examine the retina and optic nerve at the back of the eye.
Intraocular Pressure Test: A numbing drop is applied and a small device measures the pressure inside your eye, screening for glaucoma.
Depending on findings or specific concerns, we may conduct other tests like color vision testing or visual field testing.
Will insurance cover a routine eye exam?
Generally, most insurance providers will cover your eye exams. It’s important to check with your insurance provider to verify your coverage.
Our BTL Devices
In addition to providing routine ophthalmology services like eye exams near Salem, Marblehead Ophthalmology acquired Emface and Exion devices for our practice. These are innovative aesthetic devices that actually have a lot to offer patients for their eye health.
Exion RF utilizes radiofrequency energy to effectively treat dry eyes. This process resolves blockages in the meibomian glands, restoring their function to produce oil for tears, relieving dry eye symptoms. Additionally, it reduces inflammation around the eyes, further improving patient comfort.
Drooping eyelids due to sagging skin can limit vision and cause discomfort, known as ptosis. This condition reduces peripheral vision and may lead to eye strain or headaches. Emface offers a noninvasive solution by lifting and tightening loose skin around the eyes to improve both vision and appearance
